Patient Controlled Analgesia (Pain Pumps)

	Every patient has the right to pain relief, and some of them will have patient-controlled analgesia so they can receive prescribed medication immediately. For patient protection, the pumps are very precise in the amount of pain medication the patient receives. Nevertheless, it is very important that only the patient push the button. Do not try to “help” the patient by pushing the button for them. These pumps are given only to people who can manage them, and they are instructed in their use.

Cell Phones

	Cell phones emit radio frequencies that can interfere with electronic equipment. They can activate or turn off alarms on monitors, cause ventilators to shut down or deliver the wrong amount of gas or cause infant warmers and incubators to overheat. To reduce the potential risk of medical equipment malfunctions, the use of cellular phones is not permitted within 20 feet of critically monitored patients. Cell phones may be used in public areas, in offices and at nursing stations.

Balloons

	Latex balloons can cause allergic reactions in some people and are a choking hazard for children. For this reason they are not allowed in the hospital. Mylar (foil) balloons are a safe alternative.

Safety and Security

	We have a Security Department with fully-trained security guards on site seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Visitors can request an escort to their automobile by calling the Security Department at 473-2007.

Patient’s Right to Privacy

	Deaconess has detailed policies and procedures in place that conform to state and federal laws designed to safeguard your patient’s rights to privacy and confidentiality. We will update patients on their condition, and they can choose to share information with family members and significant others. For a patient unable to share or understand information, please select a spokesperson to be responsible for informing other family members and significant others of the patient’s progress. Let the nurse know how to reach the spokesperson at all times. However, disclosure of the patient’s condition may be restricted due to confidentiality concerns.
